The Power of Social Media Marketing

I am an admitted geek for indie films, and I have long been a fan of Mark and Michael Polish. Needless to say, when I had the opportunity to screen the latest Polish Brothers' flick a few months ago, I was stoked. An homage to the French New Wave, For Lovers Only profiled two former loves who travel across France, rekindling their romance right where they'd left off years earlier. But that isn't what this post is about; as I've stated in several previous posts, I am a big fan of social media marketing. If done well, you can achieve phenomenal success on even the smallest of budgets. For Lovers Only is a prime example.

With expenses consisting primarily of food money, the Polish Brothers were able to get everything else - from hotel rooms to location rentals - donated through social channels. The film was shot on a camera Mike already owned. When it came to marketing the film, studios were not involved. Mark Polish took to Twitter and Facebook to announce the film's release. To say the least, the results were rather astounding. To date, the movie has grossed over $200,000 via iTunes, Amazon.com, and Video On Demand. While that kind of revenue might not sound like a windfall by Hollywood standards, it's also all profit.

Never underestimate the power of social media. If you have the creativity to market and reach your audience in unique ways, you can succeed - even on a shoestring budget.
