It can be hard to come up with that perfect design when you are starting on a site. There is great importance in blending functionality with the tone you want to convey. The design you come up with needs to showcase your purpose, but it also needs to be usable.
Your content can be a great source of inspiration for your design. Take a good look at what your site is about and how best that can be showcased by your website. A lot of content can be showcased by a standard creative design. This doesn't mean boring, it just means you can fall back on a standard format.
If your site is something more like a photo gallery displaying a photographers art work then you might try going with a minimalistic site. A simple design and minimal content can be a good way to go. If you want to really showcase something on your site you don't want to detract from it with busy design.
