Why I Like Small Cameras
We have two kinds of video cameras here at Lunawebs, consumer and prosumer. The consumer camera is the Canon HF100, an off-the-shelf HD camcorder that records to SD cards (bye bye tape!). We also own the larger and more feature-rich Panasonic HMC-150, an HD camera that shoots pretty pictures and looks and acts very professional. It too records to the very convienient SD format.
I have to admit I like the little Canon. It's super compact and shoots a nice image (though not as nice as the Panny, of course). It looks like every other camcorder, doesn't call attention to itself (except when on a real tripod where it looks miniscule) and wieghs almost nothing. It's great for any kind of stealth video. Pull out the SD card, pop it into your computer and Presto! The transfer of video is quick and painless. Don't plug the camera itself into your machine, however, or you will be at the mercy of slower transfer speeds. Use a card reader.
The HF100 gets a lot less use with the Panny on the scene, but it is still a good camera whose image looks very nice on YouTube in HD. You can also get one fairly cheap ($500-600) and being solid state with no moving parts, it should last a good long while. Just don't drop it in the toilet, because it will easily fit through the seat.
