What is an Intrusion Detection System ( in terms of computers )? An IDS runs as an application on a computer or even on a separate device to monitor a network or server for attempts at intrusion or disabling computer systems. Most IDS, in addition to providing monitoring, will take steps to prevent malicious users from succeeding in gaining unwanted access. If an IDS were to find a user's activity to be suspicious, it would alert a network administrator and take steps to block that user from services on the network.
