10 Search Engine Optimization or SEO No Nos

  1. Do not use the same title tag through out your site. Use unique title tags on each and every page and be sure to use the most powerful and relevant keywords that apply to the page topic. Also do not use over 9 words or 62 characters.
  2. Do not use content from other sites. Write your own unique content.
  3. Avoid using any kinds of frames. Most major search engines get lost in frames and they also will not index a large amount of frame based sites.
  4. Do not make your site anymore the 3 levels deep (portfolio/web design/professional/). Search engines tend to get caught up in large folder directories
  5. Do not go flash crazy. Search engines can not crawl the contents of a flash file.
  6. Avoid using JavaScript on image roll overs, to inject content or to produce a drop down menu. Search engines do not execute javascript.
  7. Do not use link farms as a quick and easy way to gain large amounts of links back to your site. Major search engines such as Google monitors your link building campaign and many things like gaining to many non relevant and poor links back to your site raises a flag.
  8. Do not keyword stuff. If your content does not read well and does not sound professional in the target market then it's no good.
  9. Do not use meta redirects or javascript redirects on any of your pages. Search engines will not follow them and if to many are present it may raise a flag.
  10. Do not link out to any spammers etc. Search engines monitor who you link to and rate you accordingly. If you hang out with a bad neighborhood you will then become part of that bad neighborhood in the search engine's eyes.
